Our approach towards the community has evolved considerably over the past few years and is increasingly integral to the way we manage our business. The objective of this approach is to build trust in the communities where we work with the aim of making a positive contribution to the social and economic development of the areas around our operating sites.

At Emirates Steel we offer our available resources to organizations that share our commitment to strengthening local communities through meaningful approaches to social challenges. Emirates Steel’s strategy for Shaping Communities focuses on three key areas: education, health, and community development.

Here are a few ways we seek to create positive change.

In education, Emirates Steel sponsors high school graduates with the goal of developing a talent pool of technically qualified nationals to further support its Emiratization drive. To ensure their development, rigorous orientation and skill enhancement programs are in place to support and deliver required job competencies. The company has developed tailor-made programs to ensure the delivery of the required expertise and core technical competencies through vocational certification, diploma and bachelor degree programs. These qualifications have been approved by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and are internationally recognized.

In health, we donated equipment in 2013 to the Autism Trust in Dubai to help autistic children learn new skills and overcome a wide variety of developmental challenges. By donating to these children, Emirates Steel realizes that autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. In the US for example, the prevalence of autism has risen to 1 in every 88 births and almost 1 in 54 boys. The lifetime cost of caring for a child with autism ranges from $3.5 million to $5 million.

In 2013, Emirates Steel also extended its support to the rehabilitation of children with special needs and their employment. Abu Dhabi provides comprehensive social welfare schemes that benefit all segments of society in the fields of education, employment, healthcare and social assistance. Among them, people with special needs receive special care and support to help them overcome disabilities and play an effective role in society as productive members.

Community Development

In community development, Emirates Steel supported in 2013 in cooperation with Al Raha Police the empowerment of families, promotion of stability, maintenance of the social fabric and protection of its integrity.

We believe that within strong, supportive families, children develop a range of skills and competencies essential for meeting the responsibilities of adulthood - competencies related to health and well-being, personal and social functioning, cognitive and creative development, vocational choice and pursuit, and citizenship. Families in distress may need assistance to provide basic care, comfort, and nurture for their children - assistance that may include financial and other help in providing basic necessities such as shelter and medical care. As a socially responsible corporate citizen, we at Emirates Steel share responsibility for preparing our nation's youth for adulthood with families and numerous agencies and organizations.
